So Do Air Purifiers Really Work? We Tested 4 Brands and Here's What You Need to Know

Just like food and beauty products, we invest a lot on our diets and skincare routines to make sure we are living in the most optimal health state, but how often do you consider the air quality and what's polluting your air?

Here are few stats:

1. 90 percent of the air that goes into your lungs is indoor air.

2. 5x U.S. EPA studies found that indoor air pollutants were generally two to five times greater than outdoor pollution levels. In some cases, indoor air pollution was 100 times greater.

3. Nearly 25 million people in the U.S. suffer from asthma.

4. Up to 30 percent of adults have allergies.

5. About 40,000 droplets of the flu virus are in a typical sneeze. The smaller droplets can shoot out at 100 miles per hour and may remain suspended in the air for hours or days.

When it comes to looking for the best air purifiers, know what to look for.

Types of filters:

1. HEPA Filters

- Removes 99.97% of particles > 0.3 micrometers
- Best for removing bacteria, allergens (such as dust, pollen, and mold)
- Can't clean the air of odors, smoke, fumes, or chemicals

2. Charcoal/Carbon Filters

- Designed to filter out odors, smoke, fumes, & chemicals.
- The heavier the carbon filter the better the filter will be at removing chemicals.
- If you are chemically sensitive or need to remove odors, smoke fumes or VOCs make sure your filter of choice contains a substantial carbon filter.
We rounded up some of our favorite air purifiers below:

1. Molekule

While current air purifiers try to catch pollutants in filters, Molekule uses nanotechnology to break down and completely eliminate pollutants on a molecular level. Molekule Air destroys pollutants in rooms up to 600 sq. ft., like master bedrooms & living rooms. Molekule’s flagship purifier, Air uses PECO technology to destroy bacteria, mold, viruses, allergens and VOCs.

Cost: $799 or $45/month

2. Dyson Pure Cool

Dyson Cryptomic technology captures particles and continuously destroys formaldehyde released from household items. Sealed HEPA filters capture 99.95% of ultrafine pollutants, while activated carbon removes gases. This includes benzene and NO2.

Cost: $649

3. Coway Airmega 400S

State-of-the-art HEPA air purifiers with smart mode integrate with your Amazon Alexa or Google Home and are app enabled. The Max2 filter—a combined activated carbon and a True HEPA filter—captures and reduces up to 99.97 percent of particles 0.3 microns in the air, including pollen, pollutants and other allergens.*** It also reduces more than 99 percent of volatile organic compounds and reduces fumes such as NH3 and CH3CHO.****

Cost: $749

4. AirDoctor

AirDoctor is one of the affordable prescription for healthy indoor air. A new, third-party laboratory test proves how effective AirDoctor is at capturing bacteria and viruses--something we are all very concerned about right now.

In a standardized test room, AirDoctor removed 99.99% of a range of bacteria and viruses.

Not only does AirDoctor remove virtually all airborne particles, but it also traps those other common indoor air pollutants that can build up in your house like off-gassing and formaldehyde from furnishings and building materials and toxic VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) and chemicals from everyday activities like cooking and using personal care products.

In the wake of the pandemic, everyone is searching for ways to protect themselves and their loved ones.

Cost: $658.95
