SARAH, FOUNDER, PIPER WAI
PIPER WAI is the first charcoal deodorant to neutralize odor and absorb wetness, PiperWai is redefining the future of clean everyday essentials.
With no heavy fragrances, the smell dissipates throughout the day, so you just smell odorless and clean. PiperWai chose the special blend of 11 essential oils because of the powerful way they interact with our ingredients to keep you smelling fresh.
PiperWai works with your body chemistry, not against it (like the synthetic fragrances in conventional deodorant do). The goal is to neutralize odor - not just cover it up.
We sat down with the founder of PiperWai to get to know how she came about her wellness journey and how PiperWai as born.
FIRST THING IN THE MORNING
My morning routine is not perfect yet because I do glance at my emails to get a feel for what’s going on for the day, I look at my calendar just to remind myself what I have to do. Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day so I love making a huge breakfast. I usually make avocado toast or I’ll do a granola fruit bowl. If I have time I’ll try to exercise & do yoga and then I’m pretty much in my inbox usually around 8 am just trying to catch up and make sure that I’m not overwhelmed with emails for the rest of the day.
WELLNESS JOURNEY
I grew up in Philly and went to UPENN to focus on Urban Studies and Real Estate and that was when I actually started to get really interested in healthy living and healthy eating. The best opportunity I had out of college was to go into commercial real estate. So that’s what I did it to really start my career for the first 2 and a half years after college. I realized it definitely wasn’t my calling but it was a good start because I learned a lot about corporate culture. Right after my job I took a little time off just to travel and do volunteer projects before going back to grad school. I went to Columbia and it was during that time that I had actually brought the first version of the deodorant with me really just to try it out in the climate I was in. That’s when I had the idea that this was a really great product. It was something I was essentially making in a kitchen with a childhood friend and I knew there was a lot of demand for it cause I’d been researching healthy living for years. I knew there was a lack of good natural deodorant on the market just from personal experience so I had this idea to brand it into a community that brings products to customers but also creates a lifestyle around wellness.
STAYING ACTIVE
Yoga is my favorite way to Detox. Certain poses are detoxifying and overall it’s great, you can do it anywhere. I’ve gotten into infrared saunas so I’ve actually been going, at one point I was doing it once a week. So I have terrible back pain and it started to get much worse when I was in my corporate job and then stress piled on to that so I love anything that stretches out the upper or mid back. I do run, but I don’t do it as much now because of the back pain but I love running so if I ever get a chance to run on the beach or along the river.
FAVORITE WELLNESS ACCOUNTS
One of my favorites is the @healthymaiden, she’s based in San Francisco she has a podcast and she also has her blog, it’s general lifestyle, she is a yoga practitioner and she also has a lot of great recipes and her podcast will dive into everything from sexual health to mental wellness to food, personal care products.
There isn’t one in particular but I follow a lot of these natural medicine accounts that have random bits of advice about using herbs for different ailments.
The last one is Parsely Health. They’re a medical group in New York San Francisco and LA and it’s a medically based membership practice so I think it like incorporates eastern and western medical practices but essentially it’s a group of doctors. So I follow their account and a lot of their tips.
LATEST WELLNESS PURCHASE
I just purchased a gravity blanket for one of my employees for her birthday. It’s based on the idea that when we sleep having weight on top of us reduces stress levels. It’s a biological function that your body just feels safer when their weight on top of you when you’re sleeping and it promotes all kinds of chemicals in your brain that help with relaxation and sleep so apparently it’s a good stress release. For me, my last wellness purchase was a jade roller.
ADVICE TO HERSELF AT 25
Well, 25 was around the time I started my company so to be careful who you bring in to help with the business. To honor my boundaries, especially in my line of work as an entrepreneur. To know my worth, if you see something that’s wrong, stand up for it. If you’re in a position where you’re being taken advantage of, don’t just let it happen.
